Recently, low carb and Keto diets have become very popular. We’re breaking down the truth about carbs and why it’s not sustainable to cut out an essential macronutrient for long-term health.

For a little bit of context, the Keto diet is a particular type of low-carb diet that focuses on fat consumption rather than protein (which most other low-carb diets focus on). It has been proven to be a helpful aid in reducing the frequency of epileptic seizures in kids, and many praise it for its supposed weight loss benefits, but let’s unpack those. 

Using Fat as Fuel

The idea behind a low carb diet is that it forces your body to use secondary fuel sources, because you are depriving it of its primary fuel source: glucose. The human body has evolved to rely on glucose as its primary food source, so when it isn’t receiving that from food (aka carbs), it burns fat through the process of ketosis as a way to survive. Cool, right? Well, not in the long term. Our bodies have evolved such that it thinks when we are using fat as our main energy source, we are in a survival state. 

What Fat Can’t Do, Carbs Can

Survival mode means starvation, shutting down bodily processes that it doesn’t have energy for. Importantly, more than 20% of processes in our body cannot utilize fat for fuel under any circumstance. Among these are certain parts of the central nervous system and the brain, which can only use glucose for fuel. This results in fatigue, brain fog, and damage to your heart and muscles.

While dropping carbs has been a widely popular way for decades to lose weight quickly (remember the Atkins diet craze?), the results are not long-term. Many end up gaining back the weight and often gaining more than before as cutting carbs can wreak havoc on the metabolism.
